The Difference Between a Turbine and a Generator

A common confusion arises between the turbine and the generator, even though they sit on a single shaft: the turbine is mechanical and provides motion, while the generator is electrical and converts it into electricity.

In photos of power plants, they appear as a single elongated body on a shared shaft, leading many to confuse them. But the difference is fundamental: one knows nothing about electricity at all, and the other knows nothing about steam — each is only half the story without the other.

The Classic Technical Warning

One common mistake is confusing the turbine with the generator. The turbine provides the motion, while the generator converts that motion into electricity. They may sit on a single shaft or very close together within the plant, but their functions are completely different.

And Between Them, the Shaft

The rotating shaft is the link: it receives the turbine's torque and delivers it to the generator. At its two ends, the conservation of energy is embodied in physical form: every electrical watt the generator outputs came in as mechanical torque from the turbine (minus losses) — if the electrical load increases, the shaft is effectively loaded more heavily, and the turbine needs to deliver more drive.

A Question That Tests Understanding

If asked "Where is electricity actually generated in a steam power plant?" the answer is: in the generator, exclusively. The boiler produces steam, the turbine produces rotation, and the generator alone produces electricity — the whole chain is laid out in the steam power plant step by step.

Interview question: What is the difference between a turbine and a generator?

Sample answer: The turbine is a mechanical device: it receives a moving fluid — steam, gas, water, or air — whose force spins its blades, producing rotation on a shaft. The generator is an electromechanical device: it receives this rotation and, via electromagnetic induction, converts it into voltage and current. They may sit side by side on a single shaft, but their functions are completely different: the turbine provides motion and produces no electricity, while the generator produces electricity but does not create its own motion — both are links in a single conversion chain.

Common Mistake

Saying "the turbine generates electricity" in an interview or report. The turbine generates nothing electrical — it is simply the generator's prime mover, and confusing the two reveals a gap in understanding the most basic conversion chain in a power plant.
